Welcome to the SBSNA's website. Our boundaries run from Washington to Oregon Avenues, and from 13th to 15th Streets. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the neighborhood by managing zoning changes and development. We try to bring together like-minded people who want to improve properties and to protect the historic nature of the architecture. Our goal is to make the community a more attractive and secure place for residents and businesses.

We meet every third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the Morgan Conference Room of Methodist Hospital, 2301 South Broad. Please come join us for our next meeting, check our Calendar page for updates.

IN the NEWS!

April 4, 2009 SBSNA members were out in full force on Broad Street as part of the city wide clean up to sweep the sidewalks and gutters from Washington to Oregon Avenues. Over 65 contractor bags of trash were collected and removed. Another team continued maintenance of the street light poles by removing litter and flyers and repainting them. Good job, and thanks to everyone who participated!

February 18, 2009 City Controller Alan Butkovitz met with our group to talk about the slow responses of city departments and ways to raise additional revenue for the present budget crisis.

January 29, 2009 The Streets Department Community Outreach Specialist met with our group to discuss basic recycling "Do's and Don'ts." Please remember to not include plastic bags with your normal recycling trash, as they wreak havoc on the shredding machine.

September 20, 2008 Pole cleaning Part 2. We returned to finish the job started on May 31. Each and every street lamp pole on a 1.5 mile stretch of Broad has now been cleaned of litter and freshly painted. At 12 poles per block, that's 204 renovated poles! Many thanks to all who came out for this event!

May 31, 2008 Ever notice how unsightly and littered the street lamp poles are from years of glued on flyers? Were you aware that the posting of signs on these poles is actually illegal (a $75./sign penalty)? SBSNA has declared zero tolerance for littered poles. We spent the day scraping the street poles of flyers, tape, glue and string-- then lovingly painted them. We'd like to thank the residents, the Anti-Graffiti Program, and the DCED for their financial contributions, which enabled us to purchase paint, brushes, gloves and cleaning solvents.

June 13, 2007 A very large crowd came out to the public meeting at St. Agnes Hospital to express their concerns about the safety of the neighborhoods. In attendance were the Captains of our South Philadelphia police districts -- the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 17th. We'd like to thank our neighboring civic associations who helped us get the word out for this interesting meeting, the public response was overwhelming.

October 24, 2006 A good crowd of people who have been having problems with flooding in their basements came out for a meeting with representatives from the Water Department. A power point presentation showed photographs of the insides of the sewers which, despite their age, are in relatively good condition. One of the conclusions that has been drawn is that the recent flooding is in part caused by climate changes-- and the resulting torrential downpours we've been having. A proposal to correct the problems will be presented to the community once a computer model can be generated and a corrective plan can be developed.

Please contribute to our efforts.

Every penny goes to improving the neighborhood.
